Exclusive Interview – Director Tom McGrath on The Boss Baby

April 5, 2017 by Freda Cooper

A suited and nearly-booted baby throws a household into chaos in The Boss Baby, the latest animation from DreamWorks, which arrives in UK cinemas this Friday.  Its director, Tom McGrath, talked to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper about why he wanted to make the film – and why the “micro manager” doesn’t intentionally look like the current occupant of The White House.

Best known to animation fans as the voice of the penguin Skipper in the Madagascar movies, Tom McGrath has stepped away from the microphone to what he now describes as his “day job”, directing.  Despite that background, he wasn’t in the least tempted to voice the main character in his debut as a director, The Boss Baby.  He was more than happy to leave that to Alec Baldwin who, as one of four brothers, had an affinity with the script.

McGrath also puts all the speculation about the baby’s apparent resemblance to Donald Trump firmly in its place.  It’s all down to timing ….

The Boss Baby is released in UK cinemas on Friday, 7 April. Read our review here.
