Jack Sparrow will be very different in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

April 28, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Johnny Depp’s character Jack Sparrow apparently won’t be quite as we remember him when he turns up in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

With the series being away for the past six years, 2017’s return to the franchise will hopefully breathe new life into a set of films that began way back in 2003.

Depp’s character has since become iconic, and for good or ill, has defined his career thereafter.

Speaking to SFX Magazine, co-director of the upcoming movie Joachim Ronning, has said that the swashbuckling adventurer that we know and love isn’t the same old Jack.

“He’s lost his luck. And luck was a big part of his lifestyle. He’s lost his way. He’s lost his horizon. He’s not on the ocean anymore when we find him. He’s a land pirate and he’s miserable. He’s alone. He’s not Captain Jack anymore, he’s just Jack.”

Whether this new approach to the series’ lynchpin will help the franchise return to its former glory will of course remain to be seen, but at this point in proceedings, a different angle on the character might not be the worst thing in the world.

As long as he gets his mojo back at some point of course.

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea – notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifull small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki) and features returning stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley, Kevin McNally, Stephen Graham and Martin Klebba alongside new additions Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, David Wenham, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani and Paul McCartney. It is set for release on May 26th 2017.
