The Mummy could be heading for Tom Cruise’s biggest global opening

June 8, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The latest Tom Cruise blockbuster The Mummy could see the star land his biggest ever global opening at the box office.

Critics haven’t been kind too the return of The Mummy, with the reboot currently sitting at a 37 on Metacritic [read our ★★ review here].

However, negative reviews don’t have to be a sign of a film’s doom in 2017 as even with lukewarm projections for its domestic bow, international numbers could save the movie, much as they did for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

It is predicted that The Mummy will only accumulate a disappointing $35m – $42 million in the U.S.; however, numbers overseas are looking much better, with projections saying the film could clear $125m – $135 million, bringing its global box office weekend to $160m – $177 million.

Far from being a disappointment for Cruise, this would in fact signal the Hollywood icon’s biggest ever opening weekend. Not too shabby.

Of course these are only predictions, so a verdict on the film’s ultimate success will have to wait for a few more days.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy is set for release on June 9th, 2017, with Alex Kurtzman directing a cast that includes Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys).
