The CW to develop Supernatural spin-off Wayward Sisters

June 21, 2017 by Ricky Church

It seems The CW has not given up hope for a spin-off to Supernatural, their longest running series. Variety is reporting that the network is in talks to develop a spin-off called Wayward Sisters, using an episode in Supernatural‘s upcoming thirteenth season as a backdoor pilot. The series will star Kim Rhodes as she reprises her recurring role of Sheriff Jody Mills.

Wayward Sisters will see Mills, who first appeared in Supernatural’s fifth season, take in “a group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy. Under Mills’ training and protection, these women will emerge as a supreme monster-fighting force.” Other characters from Supernatural could also migrate over to the potential spin-off.

The CW previously tried to develop a spin-off to Supernatural in its ninth season, using an episode as a backdoor pilot. Titled Supernatural: Bloodlines, the series would have remained largely unconnected from the adventures of San and Dean Winchester, focusing on a new hunter in Chicago as he fought werewolves and other monsters from controlling the city. That series, however, was never picked up.

Supernatural showrunners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer will executive produce the backdoor pilot with Phil Sgriccia and Robert Berens. Dabb and Berens writing the script.

Supernatural, meanwhile, will return for its thirteenth season on October 12 as it continues the ongoing saga of Sam and Dean Winchester.
