Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell praises Wonder Woman

July 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

During an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote her new series Howards End, Hayley Atwell – who portrays the character of Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – was full of praise for Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman, with the actress sharing her thoughts on the female led blockbuster to Buzzfeed News.

I thought it was a triumph,” said Atwell. “I came out of that walking on air, and I think what’s brilliant about it is, it’s a genre piece, it’s a superhero movie, it’s pitch-perfect from Gal’s performance to the script to the music, it has just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor, it’s engaging, and I was so so surprised by the end of it. Seventy-six years in the making, that’s breaking box-office records, and it’s led by a woman, and it’s directed by a woman — I was like, ‘Patty! Fucking! Jenkins! Yes! What it means for all of us — because it’s not just women are great — it’s going, ‘Come on, let’s represent who we really are as women,’” she said. “They did it beautifully. Not only did they pull it off, they were just like, ‘Boom!’ They excelled.”

Atwell has previously expressed her interest in headlining an Agent Carter feature film, although the honor of Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie will fall to 2019’s Captain Marvel.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
