Cate Blanchett to star in Lucille Ball biopic for Amazon

August 9, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Amazon Studios has bought a Lucille Ball biopic starring Cate Blanchett.

The film, which is entitled Lucy and Des, has the Oscar winner Blanchett attached to star and a screenplay written by Aaron Sorkin.

The production company behind the film is Escape Artists with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch producing.

Blanchett and Sorkin were attracted to the project two years ago, which will centre on Ball’s 20 year marriage to Desi Arnaz. Ball and Arnaz eloped in 1940 and together created the landmark sitcom I Love Lucy in 1951. Ball won four Emmy’s for the role.

Ball gave birth to her daughter the same year that I Love Lucy was created and then her son in 1953. Ball and Arnaz later divorced 1960 with Ball then running the couple’s Desilu Productions from 1962. Ball died in 1989.

The producers for Lucy and Des are currently on the lookout for an actor to play Arnaz.
