Back in June comic book writer Mark Millar claimed on social media that he’d heard whispers that Warner Bros. was inviting pitches for a Superman: Red Son adaptation, with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts subsequently revealing that he’d spoken to the studio about that very possibility.
At the time, the idea of an adaptation of Red Son – an alternate reality story which sees the infant Kal-El crashlanding in the Soviet Union, as opposed to Smallville, Kansas – seemed odd, given that the story wouldn’t fit with the continuity of the DC Extended Universe. However, since then, we’ve heard that Warner is looking to launch a new DC label outside of the shared universe, meaning that a Red Son movie could well be back on the table.
During an interview with Collider, director Vogt-Roberts was asked about his thoughts on this new venture, and whether he’s still keen to bring the Red Son storyline to the screen:
“Well, apparently they’re taking that idea. They’re not taking me up, because I have gotten no phone calls about that. I was surprised to hear the headline, regardless of whether or not they want to do Red Son, I think that is the smartest, most punk rock thing that DC can do right now to separate themselves from Marvel is just to double-down and say, ‘We’re going to tell a bunch of crazy stories. We’re going to tell stories in different universes and different times and really play around and just tell you great stories with these characters.’ To me, I think that the expanded universe is one long story thing that will always serve its purpose, but we’ve got to think about what’s next. To me, that’s interesting. To me, that’s … I’m happy that they’re apparently now entertaining that idea. I would love to get a call saying, ‘Hey, do you want to talk about Red Son?’ But I have yet to receive that phone call.”
