It looks like Nintendo may finally have got over the disastrous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, as the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the gaming giant is teaming up with Illumination Entertainment for an animated movie featuring its iconic company mascot.
According to the report, negotiations have been going on for a year, and Universal Pictures – who have partnered with Nintendo on several theme parks, and finance and distribute Illumination’s movies – helped to swing the deal, which is said to be for one movie, with the potential for more.
Nintendo has been hugely protective of its intellectual properties ever since the first Super Mario Bros. adaptation, which was widely panned by audiences and critics and tanked at the box office. Since then, the company has refused to let Hollywood anywhere near Mario, or its other beloved IPs such as The Legend of Zelda.
