John Rhys-Davies says Tolkien “spinning in his grave” about new Lord of the Rings TV series

November 16, 2017 by Samuel Brace

John Rhys-Davies has that J.R.R. Tolkien would be “spinning in his grave” regarding the newly announced Lord of the Rings TV series.

The news that The Lord of the Rings is to become a TV series via Amazon was certainly cheered by some, however, others like the actor behind Gimli in Peter Jackson’s lauded adaptation isn’t too pleased.

John Rhys-Davies apparently doesn’t see any merit in the endeavour and believes that the only reason the show is being made is to cash an easy cheque.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Rhy-Davies said that he was slightly “baffled” by the idea, and that those making the show “are so utterly unprincipled and greedy for money” that Tolkien must be “spinning in his grave.”

Rhys-Davies doesn’t believe that the show is being made for the right reasons, and that Amazon are just cashing in on The Lord of the Rings brand.

The actor suggests that they should have instead adapted a different fantasy work with elves and goblins, saying that such a show would still be a “great tribute to Tolkien.”
