LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the latest game in from LEGO and Travellers Tales. The story here revolves around Kang the Conqueror travelling though time and dimensions stealing parts of cities to make a super city – Chronopolis. The plot introduces a new range of Marvel characters that we haven’t seen before in previous games, as well as alternate versions from different realities.
The game has a decent story and allows you to take control of so many cool characters – all with unique abilities and aesthetics. Like with every LEGO game, each character has a unique set of powers that allows you to overcome obstacles in each level. There are plenty of levels with different lengths and difficulty and a cool hub world to explore. The game also allows you to play co-op which I didn’t get a chance to do with someone, but having played co-op on previous LEGO games, I know that can make the experience that much more fun.
During the story mode you are limited to completing the levels, and it is in free mode after completing the game where the fun begins. Going back through levels, collecting all the minikits, studs and rescuing Stan Lee in peril gives the game a lot of longevity. Towards the end of the game when you have unlocked all the characters you can really go and explore the hub world and levels and learn in detail how each character and their skills will help you to get 100% completion.
A lot of the missions do feel very repetitive and you feel like you are being given nothing new at times. Some missions are great and diverse, though some feel familiar as you cover old ground. Considering that there have been so many LEGO games that follow the same formula – not just Marvel but other franchises too – some gameplay feels like you’ve done it all before. LEGO games follow a formula that offers players a good experience, though nothing new and exciting is offered in this game unfortunately. You get more of the good stuff you have been getting in previous LEGO games, but nothing that really makes this stand out.
At times some levels are poorly designed and I came across several bugs that meant I couldn’t progress through the mission without having to restart the mission – which is obviously very frustrating. I only encountered these bugs and issues three times during the game though so it wasn’t a massive deal. Some levels though have too much going on and it isn’t clear what you have to do or how you can do it. I found myself on several occasions going back and forth in an area to figure out how I get to the next section, even having to look up how to progress one time.
Overall LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a good experience and will provide gamers with plenty of hours of fun. Its shortcomings are noticeable and frustrating, though if you can look past the issues and jump in you will certainly have a good time.
