Henry Cavill and Angela Bassett featured in new Mission: Impossible – Fallout image, director explains the title

January 27, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It’s been quite a busy week on the Mission: Impossible front. On Thursday, Tom Cruise revealed that the sixth insatlment of the spy series is going by the title Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and yesterday he gave us a new image of his character Ethan Hunt in yet another death defying stunt. Now, he’s been back on Twitter once again to share another promotional image from the Paramount Pictures sequel, this time featuring new cast additions Henry Cavill and Angela Bassett…

Meanwhile, speaking to Empire Magazine, returning director Christopher McQuarrie has explained why he chose the title Fallout for the latest chapter of the franchise:

“The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative. There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat. There’s the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions. The one thing that came out of it was I thought it should be a one-word title. This is a different kind of movie, it should be expressing a different attitude. It should be striking its own ground, and that’s what I felt Fallout did.”

The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout will see Tom Cruise joined by returning stars Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris and Michelle Monaghan, along with new additions Henry Cavill (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Sian Brooke (Sherlock), Angela Bassett (American Horror Story) and Vanessa Kirby (The Crown). Christopher McQuarrie is returning to write and direct. It is set for release on July 27th, 2018.
