Domhnall Gleeson says his Star Wars: The Last Jedi force choke scene was tough to navigate

February 6, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Being force choked, or rather, acting like you’re being force choked, is harder than it looks according to Domhnall Gleeson.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi there were a number of impressive uses of the force, one of those was certainly when Snoke force choked Hux despite the two being vast distances apart.

It was a humiliating moment for Hux, one of many in the film, and the actor behind the character, Domhnall Gleeson, has explained what it’s like to experience the infamous dark side technique and how he struggled with performing the scene.

“It’s funny because you look at it and you’re like, I don’t know where to put, I don’t know if it’s supposed to be the feeling of an actual hand or whether it’s just compressing on itself, you know what I mean?” Gleeson told USA Today. “Do you scramble up to where you think the hand would be? Or do you scramble in at the neck itself? And are you trying to relieve it or trying to help?”

With no clear answer available, Gleeson made up his own mind: “Decided that it was a…that you can’t feel the hand, you just feel like your throat is caving in,” the actor explained.

Sound lovely! Hux will surely be hoping Kylo doesn’t himself decide to treat the general to more delights of the dark side in Episode IX.
