Liev Schreiber talks Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated movie

February 20, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Following Peter Parker’s exploits in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, Sony will be passing the baton to Miles Morales later this year for the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film will see X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Liev Schreiber making his return to the Marvel universe as he lends his voice to the film’s as-yet-unrevealed villain, and speaking to Collider, Schreiber has been hyping the project and its animators.

“It was actually the animation team,” said Schreiber when asked what drew him to the project. “The guys who are working on it, I saw their work and said, ‘Wow! These guys are special.’ And it is. It’s going to be pretty special, from what I’ve seen so far. And I haven’t seen much, but it’s pretty special. They’re super-talented. … That’s what I love about it. But it also is anamorphic … ohh I don’t know if I should have said that. [laughs] If you know something about film, that’s an amazing thing for an animated film to do that well. Anamorphic is the stretched-out format and it really is a much broader, bigger canvas, which is unusual for animation because you’re generally trying to focus the action. These guys have decided to go anamorphic with it and it’s stunning. If you’ve seen that trailer, you already get a sense of what it is.”

And speaking of the trailer, you can watch that here.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) from a script by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie). Shameik Moore (The Get Down) lends his voice to Miles Morales, with Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as Miles’ uncles Aaron and Jefferson Davis, and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) portraying the as-yet-unrevealed villain.
