R.I.P Groot: Baby Groot is NOT the original Groot, according to James Gunn

February 28, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Baby Groot came around and stole the hearts of fans when he made his full debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. After a tease at the end of Guardians Vol. 1 — following a noble, and devastating sacrifice by adult Groot — Baby Groot more than lived up to the hype when he finally appeared onscreen.

Today, almost a full year after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we have learned something fascinating about Baby Groot. An important question was asked on Twitter: “Would you save a Porg, or baby Groot”? James Gunn chimed in, and (predictably) picked Baby Groot. When challenged, this was his response:

Okay. So, fascinating, and a bit depressing. One of the reasons most fans were at peace with Groot’s sacrifice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was because Baby Groot was, well, still Groot. However, that’s not the case sadly. RIP Groot. Hopefully your teenage son will learn some manners, and carry on the family name with dignity.

Guardians Vol. 3 isn’t expected to begin filming until early in 2019, with a targeted 2020 release date, but Groot and the Guardians will return this May in Avengers: Infinity War.
