Brad Pitt joins Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as official synopsis is released

March 1, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

Deadline has confirmed that Brad Pitt has joined Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino’s next movie, which now has a title; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Sony, who won a heated distribution war for the rights to release the movie, have also revealed the official synopsis:

“A story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbour…Sharon Tate.”

Margot Robbie is in talks to play the tragic Tate, with rumours continuing to swirl about the involvement of Tom Cruise and Al Pacino, although it’s unsure whether Pitt has taken the role intended for the Top Gun star.

The title is a clear reference to Tarantino’s love for all things Sergio Leone, and the director has addressed what’s rumoured to be his penultimate movie in an accompanying press release:

“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

Tarantino’s ninth film is beginning to sound like one for the ages. Let us know whether you agree, or your thoughts on this Inglorious Basterds reunion, using the comments below.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has a worldwide release date of August 9th, 2019.
