Alan Cumming lets slip his guest role as King James I in Doctor Who

March 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

During an interview of the podcast Homo Sapiens (via io9), actor Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) has revealed that he’ll be making a guest appearance in the upcoming eleventh series of Doctor Who, where he’ll come face-to-face with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor in the role of King James I.

“I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who, I’m so excited, said Cumming. “I’m a nice baddie, I’m James I, so I’m kind of like a dandy, foppy sort of coward who kind of comes alright in the end. And they said he might come back.”

Cumming then posted a message to Twitter, revealing that the BBC had wanted to keep his casting a secret: “Whoops, the cat’s out of the bag. I’m in an episode of Doctor Who! I’d told the Homo Sapiens podcast that I was doing it before Doctor Who told me it was supposed to be a big secret, so… that’s good.”

The new series of Doctor Who will premiere on BBC One later this year. In addition to Jodie Whittaker, series eleven will also welcome Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole as the Doctor’s new companions, along with incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall.
