Star Wars: The Last Jedi was 2017’s most profitable blockbuster

March 29, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been declared 2017’s most profitable blockbuster.

While Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi might have been highly divisive among Star Wars fans, and while the film didn’t make as much as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi was still a colossal success for Lucasfilm.

Bringing in a gigantic opening of $220 million, the film was always going to do well, and it capitalised on its great start by eventually reaching $620 million domestically, $670 million overseas, for a combined global haul of $1.33 billion.

While this is 46% down from what J.J Abram’s The Force Awakens managed a couple of years before, The Last Jedi still netted a profit of $417 million (via Deadline). On top of that, the revived Star Wars saga under Disney (which includes The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi) has created revenue of more than $1.5 billion.

And with Solo: A Star Wars Story very nearly upon us, Lucasfilm will likely be seeing many more good times ahead.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
