Stephen Hunter talks Dirty White Boys, Hit Springs and The 47th Samurai adaptations and Shooter TV series

October 23, 2014 by Gary Collinson

After a successful career as a Pulitzer Prize winning film critic and amidst an ongoing career as a thriving novelist, Stephen Hunter finally seems to be getting the Hollywood treatment his career has only tasted before (in the form of 2007’s Shooter which was based off his novel titled Point of Impact).

In an interview for the Baltimore Sun Hunter revealed and confirmed development on the adaptations of a few of his books both for film and television properties:

“My other-media projects sound impressive. On the other hand, [it’s possible none of them will happen.] It’s best not to get too excited. Three movies ‘in development’ are Dirty White Boys, Hot Springs and The 47th Samurai. What does ‘in development’ mean? I have no idea. And they won’t tell you. Also a TV series based on [the movie] Shooter which was based on Point of Impact. If it gets on air, I get $1.63 every time it airs, which I can use on ammo. You’re sure this is how Stephen King got so rich?”

Many of Hunter’s novels carry a distinct, film-esque visual style presumably from his history in and passion for movies so it only makes sense there seems to be interest in his many different properties.

Dirty White Boys was recently revealed to be the follow up project for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss after Game of Thrones ends, 47th Samurai had Robert Mark Kamen working on the script a few years ago and Hot Springs has been in development a long time; however so was Shooter so that should not deter fans from believing it will be a reality.

As for the Shooter TV series, Hunter’s comments serve as confirmation since the show was revealed recently to be something Paramount Pictures, TNT and Mark Wahlberg (as producer) were going to make.
