Independence Day 2 finally gets the green light, Will Smith unlikely to return

November 26, 2014 by Gary Collinson

It’s been in development for what seems like an eternity, but Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox has finally given the go ahead to Independence Day 2, although it appears that plans for the back-to-back ID Forever Part I and ID Forever Part II have been scrapped, with just one movie set to go into production in May.

According to the site, Will Smith is unlikely to return to his role as Cpt. Steven Hiller, although it seems there is still a chance he could be written into the script, which was originally penned by director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin before a rewrite from Carter Blanchard (Near Death).

Independence Day 2 was originally slated for release on June 24th 2016, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them pushing it back a week for the lucrative July 4th weekend, which would also mark the 20th anniversary of the original.
