There was going to be a Batman store in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns

December 3, 2014 by Luke Owen

Holy Meta Batman! A brilliant find over at 1989Batman.com shows an unused set from Tim Burton’s Batman Returns which was – get this – a Batman store that sold merchandise from the 1989 Batman movie. Can’t get more meta than that!

Here’s an excerpt from the Daniel Waters script:

EXT. A STORE–EARLY EVENING OF THE CURRENT ERA

Where the Batman logo fills the frame with a portentous soundtrack boom. A playful salvo of snowballs reverberates against this image as the logo is revealed to be a hanging centerpiece in the window of a Batman merchandising store, along with Batman sleds, lunch boxes, T-shirts, and ticking clocks…

EXT. THE PLAZA–NIGHT

A FIRE BREATHER smashes open a big hole in the Batman Store display window with his Fire-rod. He sticks his rod in his mouth, then bellows a cloud of flame onto the Batman merchandise.

Check out the photos below of the built Batman store that was never used. Probably for the best really. Perhaps the funniest of the mechanise sold in the store is the Batman arcade game – which has photos of Bruce Wayne on it! Way to give the secret away!
