Leaked Sony emails reveal SPECTRE details and budgetary concerns

December 11, 2014 by Gary Collinson

The leaked emails resulting from the hack into Sony has already given us details about the Spider-Man franchise and a potential Jump Street / Men in Black crossover, and now details are emerging about next year’s 007 adventure SPECTRE. Minor spoilers follow…

According to CNN (via Variety), there’s been some conflict between MGM Studios and producer Barbara Broccoli with regards to the film’s budget, which has been set at more than $300 million. Apparently MGM chief Jonathan Glickman has urged Broccoli to cut costs, with measures to reduce the budget such as swapping scenes set in Rome for London, using three carriages for a train sequence rather than four, dropping a “dramatic finale in the rain [to] lower the cost of visual/special effects, and showcasing the modern aspects of Mexico as an “incentive” to the Mexican market. However, Broccoli refused to budge, prompting Amy Pascal to contact Glickman stating that: “It’s insane and you know with no script this movie is gonna go overbudget.”

In addition to studio concerns over the budget, the email exchanges confirmed that SPECTRE will feature an appearance from Ernst Stavro Blofeld, as well as a “lesbian bad lady”.

SPECTRE is set for release in the UK on October 23rd 2015 in the UK and November 6th 2015 in the States. The film sees Sam Mendes (Skyfall) directing Bond veterans Daniel Craig as James Bond, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Ralph Fiennes as M and Jesper Christensen as Mr. White, alongside newcomers Andrew Scott (Pride) as Denbigh, Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Colour) as Madeleine Swann, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Mr. Hinx, Monica Bellucci (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) as Lucia Sciarra and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) as Oberhauser.
