On topping his performance:

“I don’t know. I’ll continue to do the best work I can I guess. The only way to top that performance is to get a script that’s even more brilliant than [Whiplash] and I don’t know if that’s possible. The script came to me from Jason Reitman who has been a wonderful source of many gifts in my career and I am very blessed.”

On identifying with the character of Fletcher:

“Oh absolutely! I completely identify with his passion and his quest for excellence. His character drive, his motivation, yeah completely identified.”

And lastly, what exactly is “your tempo”?

“Well… if you don’t know… back off.”

Whiplash also picked up awards yesterday for Sound and Editing.
