Chris Hemsworth on Thor’s role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, promises “a lengthy fight scene of destruction”

February 28, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Coinciding with the release of yesterday’s Thor character poster, the official Marvel site has posted an in depth interview with Chris Hemsworth, during which the star offered up a few details about the God of Thunder’s role in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“We pick up with Thor having stayed on Earth from Thor: The Dark World. He’s part of the team. This is his home for the moment. The initial attack from Ultron is personal because it’s at all the Avengers, and Thor then begins to see a bigger sort of picture here about what this threat could be potentially. And it begins to tie in to all of our films… I think [Thor] openly admits he doesn’t think we can win this one. The threat is so great that all of them are scratching their heads wondering if this it. It’s just an onslaught, and it doesn’t stop.  It’s a floodgate, and it could also set in motion is an even bigger threat. I think that’s what Thor’s stuck on, or where his attention certainly is. An even bigger picture of Thor being from Asgard where he can just say, ‘Hang on, there’s a whole universe here which is signaling something else.’”

If you don’t want to know anything beyond what we’ve seen in the trailers, you should stop reading now…

The fight scene between Thor and Iron Man was one of the highlights of 2012’s The Avengers, and Hemsworth went on to reveal that the two will be going at it again in the sequel: “We’re not as conflicted [as a team] as we were before. But Thor] has a pretty solid battle with Iron Man in this one, which is cool. It’s a lengthy fight scene of destruction.”

He also confirmed what many have suspected – that Scarlet Witch will use her powers to unlock the Avengers’ worst fears: “I think [the Avengers] will begin to have their fears held up in front of them. For Thor, I think it’s a corruption of power. Trying to have the understanding that we’re in this endless battle here and wondering when this is going to end, and how does it end. That’s where he really starts to kind of move through the story. Once that dream occurs, he can see what’s coming. It’s a ticking clock.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 23rd and North America on May 1st, with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), James Spader (Ultron), Stellen Skarsgard (Erik Selvig), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Claudia Kim (Dr. Cho) and Andy Serkis (Uylsses Klaw).
