Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms moves to 2026

May 15, 2025 by Ricky Church

Fans of George R.R. Martin are well used to long waiting times and now, in addition to the third season of House of the Dragon and the infamously delayed Winds of Winter, will have to wait a little longer for HBO’s next Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is adapted from Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, following the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. Martin has written several novellas featuring Dunk and Egg as they travel Westeros and interact with the Targaryen dynasty. The series takes place roughly 100 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones.

The series was originally slated for a Fall 2025 premiere, but today at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Upfronts presentation HBO head Casey Bloys showed off a teaser trailer which revealed 2026 was when it would premiere. He later clarified the early months of 2026 in the winter was the release window.

The news comes as House of the Dragon is currently in production on its third season and will conclude with its fourth season, as HBO announced last summer. Various other Game of Thrones spin-offs are in the works too, but none have yet come to proper development stage.

A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Sam Spruell, Daniel Ings and Tanzyn Crawford.
