ABC boss discusses The Jetsons live-action series

January 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in August of last year it was announced that ABC has given the green light to a pilot episode of The Jetsons, a live-action adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series from executive producers Robert Zemeckis, Gary Janetti and Jack Rapke.

During the Television Critics Association press tour, ABC’s Channing Dungey has confirmed to SlashFilm that the show will be shot in front of a live-action audience, but there are plans to incorporate visual effects in order to create the Jetsons’ vision of 100 years into the future:

“That is what I’m really looking forward to hearing,” said Dungey. “The team has already had a number of conversations with Zemeckis and the rest of the group. They have some really good ideas about how they want to pull that off. I have not yet been part of those conversations because I haven’t seen the script yet. They don’t want to tell me how that works until I’ve read the pages.”

The Jetsons originally ran on ABC between 1962 and 1963, with an animated feature Jetsons: The Movie released in 1990. In addition to the live-action pilot, a new animated movie is also in development at Warner Bros. under director Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Sausage Party).
