Adam Wingard says Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire will include homages to Toho movies

January 2, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Adam Wingard knows that Godzilla and Kaiju fans are eating well right now, and he’s prepared to give us even more with his new film, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire.

In a new spread for Total Film, the filmmaker dove into his upcoming MonsterVerse entry and teased that the new film homages the great work we’ve seen from Toho films over the years.

Of the new Titans we meet, Wingard tells the outlet: “One of the incredible things about Godzilla is that the character has existed in so many different tones and interpretations in the Toho films,” Wingard tells TF. “I’m a huge fan of the whole spectrum, and I’ve always really enjoyed the late Shōwa era. There are so many big ideas, and they have such epic fun with these larger-than-life characters.”

He adds, “In Godzilla vs. Kong, we paid homage to that epic tradition, including a handful of Easter eggs for the hardcore fans, and while I don’t want to give anything away, we definitely work in a few things for the Toho fans in the new film as well, so keep your eyes open!”

And we see in the new photos from Total Film, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire will see director Adam reunite with actor Dan Stevens following their cult classic The Guest. As for his new character known as Tracker, Stevens reveals that Tracker is “a specialist in these creatures… If you’ve got a sick titan, Trap is your guy.”

This latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

The film stars Rebecca Hall (“Godzilla vs. Kong,” The Night House”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Bullet Train”), Dan Stevens (“Gaslit,” “Legion,” “Beauty and the Beast”), Kaylee Hottle (“Godzilla vs. Kong”), Alex Ferns (“The Batman,” “Wrath of Man,” “Chernobyl”) and Fala Chen (“Irma Vep,” “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”).

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in cinemas from April 12th, 2024.
