Adaptation of Joe Hill’s Dracula spinoff Abraham’s Boys in the works from Lucky director Natasha Kermani

Deadline is reporting that Tea Shop Productions (47 Meters Down) has acquired the rights to Joe Hill’s short story Abraham’s Boys, and has set filmmaker Natasha Kermani (Lucky) to write and direct an adaptation.


Based on characters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Abraham’s Boys “follows Max and Rudy Van Helsing, who know nothing of their father Abraham’s past and cannot understand his overprotective attitude and strange behaviour. To make matters worse, Abraham is becoming increasingly more unhinged, paranoid, and violent.”

“I’ve always loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula and was immediately drawn to Joe Hill’s unique and personal take on the legend of Van Helsing,” said Kermani, whose second film Lucky has recently been released through Shudder [read our review here]. “Abraham’s Boys is an exciting opportunity to look at a familiar story through a new lens, and to explore classic characters and themes in a contemporary way.”

“I have always loved Joe’s short story, it has such an amazing tone and feel, so when we met Natasha we were blown away by how she wanted to approach it,” added James Harris of Tea Shop Productions. “Natasha is an exciting new filmmaker we are delighted to collaborate with.”

Abraham’s Boys joins a rapidly increasing list of Dracula-related features in development, which includes André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Chris McKay’s Renfield, a contemporary Blumhouse adaptation from Karyn Kusama, a “futuristic, sci-fi Western” version from Chloe Zhao, and Jessica M. Thompson’s The Bride.
