Alicia Vikander admits she hasn’t got a clue what’s happening with Tomb Raider 2

July 20, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

If you thought the hardest thing Lara Croft had to do was navigate the blocky underwater realms of her 1996 Tomb Raider debut, think again, because Alicia Vikander has been speaking about how her long-gestating blockbuster sequel appears to be stuck in limbo.

2018’s Tomb Raider was a rebooted reintroduction to the character of Lara Croft, and while it was met with a mixed critical and commercial reception, ultimately grossing $274M worldwide, there was enough to like about it, not least the performance of Vikander, that MGM were quick to greenlight a sequel.

Then Ben Wheatley came-and went, with Lovecraft Country‘s director Misha Green taking hold of the controller, the global pandemic happened, Amazon acquired MGM in a takeover, and before you knew it Tomb Raider 2, or Tomb Raider: Obsidian as it was now known, which was originally scheduled for March 2021, was permanently stuck on the loading screen.

Fast forward to 2022 and Vikander has been speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the status of the movie, and while she sounds excited about the prospect of playing Lara Croft again, she doesn’t seem to know if or when it will happen.

“With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue,” said Vikander. “Now it’s kind of politics. I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”

The Oscar-winning actor said that while she couldn’t reveal any details about Tomb Raider: Obsidian, she has “been excited to show the world” what they’ve come up with for the sequel.
