Amazon picks up Nicolas Cage’s Joe Exotic series

September 13, 2020 by Gary Collinson

In the wake phenomenal success of Tiger King, numerous projects were announced looking to capitalise on the Netflix documentary series – the most intriguing of which may well be a scripted TV series starring Nicolas Cage as the infamous Joe Exotic.

Deadline reporting that the package has now secured a home at Amazon Prime Video, with the streamer closing a deal for the eight-episode series from Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television.

Based on the Texas Monthly article Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild and shepherded by Amazon Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana, the logline for the as-yet-untitled series reads:

“The show centers around Joe Shreibvogel (Cage), an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park — even at the risk of losing his sanity. The series will live in the lion’s den with Joe, explore how he became Joe Exotic, and how he lost himself to a character of his own creation.”

The news follows the recent announcement, that NBC, Peacock and USA have teamed up to grant a series order to Joe Exotic, a limited series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin. Meanwhile, Tara Reid is also apparently being lined up to portray Baskin in a feature film.
