Ana de Armas’ Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde pushed to 2022

August 1, 2021 by Gary Collinson

It seems we’re going to have to wait a while longer for Blonde, the upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic starring Blade Runner 2049 and Knives Out actress Ana de Armas, with Variety reporting that Netflix has decided to push the film back to 2022 to avoid a crowded awards season.

Blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) and has been generating plenty of hype behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, with early Oscar buzz for both the film and de Armas’ performance as the screen icon.

However, Netflix is expected to push both Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, while the streamer also has hopes for Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God, Halle Berry’s Bruised, Rebecca Hall’s Passing, Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Tick, Tick…Boom!). As such, Blonde looks to make way with a shift to an as-yet-unspecified date in 2022.

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, Blonde tells a fictionalised version of the life of Marilyn Monroe. It has been in development for over a decade, with the likes of Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts both attached at previous points before de Armas came on board in 2019. Also featuring in the cast alongside the Cuban actress are Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire) and Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easstown).

De Armas will next be seen as Bond Girl Paloma in the long-delayed No Time to Die, while her upcoming slate also includes the erotic thriller Deep Water alongside Ben Affleck, and The Gray Man, the next film from Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
