André Øvredal returning to direct Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2

April 24, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Paramount and Entertainment One will team up once again to tell some very scary stories. A sequel to 2019’s surprise horror hit Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is coming, with André Øvredal returning to direct.

It’s also reported that Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman will return to pen the script, with Guillermo del Toro (who produced the first film) crafting the story. The Hollywood Reporter does not say that there’s any official word if del Toro will return as a producer of the second movie or if he’s just working on the film’s story.

The first film went on to gross over $100 million worldwide and found a home with fans and newcomers to the tales found in the popular horror books. Opening against family-film Dora The Explorer, the PG-13 horror film outranked the film debuting in the number two spot while Dora took fourth place (Hobbs & Shaw took the top spot for a second week).

The 2019 film took inspiration from Alvin Schwartz’s three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, which in turn brought Stephen Gammell’s horrifying drawings to life for the first time. Presumably, the sequel will be pulling from other tales in those books.
