Animated Spider-Man short film The Spider Within to tie into Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

March 30, 2023 by Ricky Church

With the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on the horizon, Sony Pictures Animation has announced plans to release Spider-Man: The Spider Within, an animated short film that will tie into the Spider-Verse sequel, according to Variety.

Premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, the short will take place between the first and second films as Miles Morales tries balancing his life as a high school teenager and the new Spider-Man. The official synopsis reads:

In the short, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood superhero. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.

Spider-Man: The Spider Within is being developed as part of Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ new mentorship program LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers). LENS “aims to provide high-potential candidates from underrepresented groups an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience. As part of the LENS program, four candidates will be picked from both inside and outside of their existing studios will be given creative leadership positions such as director, writer, VFX supervisor and animation supervisor.”

We’ll have to wait for more exact details on The Spider Within‘s festival premiere and first look. Are you excited for more stories set in the Spider-Verse? Will this tide you over until Across the Spider-Verse‘s release? Let us know on our social channels at @flickeringmyth…

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain, more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hails from directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers, and features a voice cast that includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Jake Johnson as Peter. B Parker, Oscar Issac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India and Jason Schwartzman as The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set for release on June 2nd, 2023.
