Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen discusses her gender-swapped villain The Ghost

March 31, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

A few weeks back there were rumours that Marvel was considering gender-swapping a villain for the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

Should that prove to be the case, it won’t be the first MCU release to do so, as Hannah John-Kamen is set to portray a female version of The Ghost in this summer’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, and speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the actress has shared a few words on the reaction she’s experienced so far.

“I always say a character from a comic book is a character from a comic book, and as an actor, you’re lifting it off the page,” said John-Kamen, who can currently be seen in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. “You’re the one who’s creating and giving it life… The reaction has been excitement and anticipation and that’s exactly how I feel. I’m like, ‘Right, let’s see this, let’s do this’.”

In addition to having a gender-swapped villain, Ant-Man and the Wasp also marks the first Marvel movie to see one of its female heroes receive top billing, ahead of next year’s first female-fronted solo movie Captain Marvel.

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a super hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

Ant-Man and The Wasp sees Peyton Reed returning to the director’s chair and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michael Pena (Luis), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie Lang), Judy Greer (Maggie), Bobby Cannavale (Paxton) and T.I. (Dave), while new additions to the cast include Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster/Goliath, Hannah John-Kamen as The Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.
