Aquaman 2 writer discusses the sequel’s inspirations and The Trench spinoff film

March 23, 2020 by EJ Moreno

During an impromptu Q&A via social media, Aquaman 2 writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has offered a few comments about the DC superhero sequel.

When asked if there was one comic book that the new movie would be based upon, Johnson-McGoldrick told fans to dig deep into Silver Age comics for a better understanding:

“We’re not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it,” he confirmed, “but if you want to know the vibe we’re going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta.”

When asked about an update on the screenplay itself, Johnson-McGoldrick noted that “It’s going good! I’m texting with [James Wan] about the draft of the script right now — I think you’re gonna dig it!”

The conversation then turned to The Trench film, a spin-off from Aquaman based upon the horror-inspired scene from the first film. While still in the very early days of development, Johnson-McGoldrick gave a little hint at where it fits into the DCEU timeline:

“Theoretically, it takes place between Aquaman 1 and 2. But some pieces of this is still being worked out.”

With the sequel and the spin-off on the way, fans have plenty more to look forward to in the Aquaman universe. Are you excited for more from the aquatic superhero? Share your feelings in the comments below, or by reaching out to us via social media @FlickeringMyth…

Aquaman 2 is set for release in December 2020, with James Wan directing returning cast members Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta) and Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master).
