Arrow’s Stephen Amell to headline indie wrestling drama series Heels

August 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With Arrow set to draw to a close with its upcoming eighth season, Stephen Amell has found his next project, with the actor set to bring the world of independent professional wrestling to Starz with a new hourlong drama series entitled Heels.

The project has been written by Michael Waldron (Loki), with Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse) serving as showrunner, and follows the men and women who chase their dreams in a family-owned Georgia wrestling promotion.

According to Deadline, Amell will play Jack Spade,  “the charismatic villain, or heel, of the Duffy Wrestling Association (DWA). In the real world, he’s its hard-working owner, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior, and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection — and for control. He says he’ll do whatever it takes to build the DWA into an empire. Will he go so far as to risk his marriage, or his relationship with his brother?”

Amell is a big pro wrestling fan in real life, and has made a number of guest appearances in the ring himself, competing at WWE SummerSlam in 2015, Ring of Honor’s Survival of the Fittest in 2017 and last year’s All In pay-per-view which served as the precursor to the new All Elite Wrestling promotion. So, we can presumably expect plenty of cameos from the pro wrestling world when production gets underway on the eight-episode series.
