Atmospheric indie horror Hellkind available for free on Steam

July 4, 2025 by Andrew Newton

For those interested in eerie, folklore-inspired horror, then Hellkind may be the game for them.  Made entirely by solo developer Emir Arkman (aka Motamot) during late nights outside his AAA job, Hellkind is a short indie game that has launched for free on Steam and dives deep into the myths and atmosphere of Galicia, a misty region in northwest Spain.

Set in the real-life village of San Andrés de Teixido, the game puts players in a mysterious world full of cults, curses and ancient rituals. Players will wake up in a strange sanctuary where something dark is already underway and it’s up to them to piece things together by solving puzzles and exploration before they become part of the ritual themselves.

What really sets Hellkind apart is its commitment to authenticity with the entire game being voiced in Galician, a language rarely featured in games. This adds a unique and haunting layer to the gaming experience. With a stark black-and-white top-down style, cryptic storytelling and a playing time that doesn’t outstay its welcome, it’s a tight, moody trip into the supernatural.

Arkman calls it a “small but meaningful” tribute to a place he’s never lived in, but has a deep fascination for its mythology and folklore.

Hellkind is available now on Steam, free for Windows and Mac.
