Austin Abrams gets swallowed alive by an 80ft sperm whale in trailer for survival thriller Whalefall

June 9, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

20th Century Studios has released the trailer for Whalefall, their adaptation of Daniel Kraus’ bestselling novel in which Austin Abrams (Weapons) is swallowed alive by a sperm whale, and must escape before his oxygen runs out.

Directed by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You), from a script he co-wrote alongside the Pulitzer Prize winning author Kraus, Whalefall also stars Josh Brolin (Dune III), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and John Ortiz (Nobody 2). Take a look at the poster and teaser trailer below…

Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.

Whalefall swims into theaters on October 16th.
