Avatar: The Way of Water joins the billion dollar club at the worldwide box office

December 29, 2022 by EJ Moreno

James Cameron has another billion-dollar movie on his hands as Avatar: The Way of Water has now surpassed that figure at the global box office in 14 days.

This movie is now the sixth film to achieve that milestone in its first two weeks of release and the first movie to hit a billion since Top Gun: Maverick earlier this year. For James Cameron, the Avatar sequel is his third movie to hit this milestone, following Titanic and the first Avatar.

While a billion dollars is always impressive, Cameron implied the film would need to earn around $2 billion to succeed. It’s been reported Avatar 2 costs $350 million to $400 million to produce before marketing. The movie still has a chance to hit that milestone, as no other blockbusters are released until February with Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. If Avatar: The Way of Water made a billion in just two weeks, then nearly two months is enough to make the movie a massive success.

James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time, with $2.9 billion globally.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently in cinemas.
