The Week in Spandex – Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spider-Man, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Suicide Squad, Valiant Cinematic Universe and more

March 14, 2015 by Gary Collinson

…Over at 20th Century Fox and it’s been a rare occasion this past week, as we’ve had some new promotional material for The Fantastic Four! Yes, Fox has dropped four new images from the Josh Trank-directed reboot featuring Reed Richards (Miles Teller), Susan Storm (Kate Mara) and Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan), while the studio has also made the decision to push the release of the already-announced The Fantastic Four 2 a week to June 9th 2017, owing to the news that Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to land on May 26th 2017…

…As Deadpool gears up to go into production, Ryan Reynolds has been speaking about the long-awaited solo feature for the Merc with the Mouth: “I’m incredibly happy about it, we’ve got a director that understands that world, and writers with a lavish devotion to the canon of that character. That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope. That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope. We don’t have the kind of money that most superhero movies do, but that’s great, actually. Necessity is the mother of invention, and that’s why we get to make the movie we want to make. You gotta have faith in the people you’re working with, and have faith in the prep, and that’s all I’m doing. On this one, the prep’s been 11 years. You’d like to think you’re putting your best foot forward, but we’ll see…”

…Moving on to Warner’s DC slate now and rumours are circulating about Deathstroke’s “major role” in the upcoming supervillain ensemble Suicide Squad, as well as the potential inclusion of Antiphon and the team of terrorists-for-hire Onslaught as antagonists to the Squad. Meanwhile, Cara Delevingne has arrived on set ahead of her role as The Enchantress, while Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) described the film as “dark”, “cool” and “dope”, and Joel Kinnaman confirmed his casting as Rick Flagg and offered up a few words of praise for director David Ayer in the process…

…Looking further ahead in the DC Cinematic Universe and Latino-Review has churned out yet another rumour, this time concerning Green Lantern, with the site claiming that Star Trek star Chris Pine is in line to play Hal Jordan. Mind you, this is an “unconfirmed” rumour (industry speak for “fabricated” rumour), so don’t be surprised if this one doesn’t pan out either…

…With The Flash returning to The CW this Tuesday, the network has released two posters for the midseason return featuring the Scarlett Speedster and his nemesis Reverse-Flash, along with a trailer for the remaining episodes, which includes our first look at Mark Hamill’s Trickster. And that’s nto all, as we’ve also got a batch of promotional images for the following week’s episode, ‘Rogue Time’, which see The Flash going up against Captain Cold, Heatwave and Golden Glider. Take a look at those here…

…Not to be forgotten, Arrow also resumes its third season this Wednesday and a promo poster has arrived online featuring Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen, along with some images from next week’s episode ‘Suicidal Tendencies’, which you can view here. Meanwhile, any fans hoping to see more of Harley Quinn in the show appear to be out of luck, with executive producer Marc Guggenheim admitting that due to Margot Robbie’s upcoming turn in Suicide Squad and FOX having nabbed the Batman rights for Gotham, the closest they’d ever come was the “wink and a nod” cameo in last season’s ‘Suicide Squad’ episode…

…With filming underway on CBS’ Supergirl, the first set photos have started arriving online, giving us a look at Melissa Benoist in her Kara Danvers guise as well as Jeremy Jordan as the villain Toyman, while it has also been announced that Malina Weissman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) has nabbed the role of a young Kara, presumably for flashbacks…

…As FOX’s Lucifer pilot gears up to go into production, four new names have been announced as joining Tom Ellis (Once Upon a Time) and Lina Esco (Cane) in the cast of the DC / Vertigo adaptation, with D.B. Woodside (24) as the angel Amenadiel, Rachael Harris (Suits) as Lucifer’s Los Angeles-based therapist, and Nicholas Gonzalez (Sleepy Hollow) and Lauren German (The Divide) as LAPD homicide detectives Dan and Chloe…

…It looks like the Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes could have some competition in the near future, with Valiant Entertainment announcing that it is heading into the movie business, having secured financing to create “the largest independent superhero universe” on the big screen. Backed by Beijing-based investors DMG Entertainment (who co-financed Iron Man 3), Valiant intends on launching numerous movies and animated products, including features based around Bloodshot, Shadowman, and Archer & Armstrong, with a particular eye on capitalising on the booming Chinese market…

…The superhero genre is set for the anthology treatment courtesy of independent German filmmakers Jens Holzheuer, Oliver Tietgen and René Wiesner, who have released the first poster, trailer and images for ABCs of Superheroes, which is set to star the likes of Bai Ling and Uwe Boll. Check out the NSFW trailer here…

…The first three episodes of Sony Television’s Powers landed on PlayStation Network this past week, and if you’ve not got access to that you can check out a trailer for the series here, as well as watching the very first episode for free (assuming you’re in the U.S., that is)…

…And finally, remember the 70s kids superhero show Electra Woman and Dyna Girl? No? Well it’s getting a reboot anyway courtesy of music video director Chris Marrs Piliero, with YouTubers Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart starring as the crime-fighting duo in a new webseries, and you can check out the first image here.
