Ben Wheatley, Armie Hammer and Lily James heading to Manderley for Rebecca

November 17, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Netflix and Working Title Films are teaming acclaimed British filmmaker Ben Wheatley with his Free Fire star Armie Hammer and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again actress Lily James for an adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier classic Rebecca, with Jane Goldman (The Woman in Black) penning the script.

The film will see James taking on the role of the second Mrs. de Winter, a naive young woman who marries the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Hammer) after a brief courtship and moves to his Manderley estate in Cornwall. However, she soon finds herself in the shadow of the first Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca, who passed away a year earlier under mysterious circumstances, and also has to contend with Mrs. Danvers, a sinister housekeeper who refuses to accept her as the new mistress of Manderley.

Rebecca was previously adapted for the screen in 1940 with Alfred Hitchcock directing Laurence Olivier as Max, Joan Fontaine as the second Mrs. de Winter and Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers. A remake was announced back in 2013, with Nikolaj Arcel (The Dark Tower) attached to direct from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), although it failed to materialise.
