Big Little Lies gets more returning faces for season 2

March 1, 2018 by Ricky Church

On the heels of the news Adam Scott will return to Monterey in the second season of HBO’s Big Little Lies, we have news of more returning characters to the upcoming season. James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling and Iain Armitage are set to reprise their roles in season 2.

Tupper returns as Nathan Carlson, the ex-husband to Reese Witherspoon’s Madeline and current husband to Zoe Kravitz’s Bonnie. In season 2, Carlson copes with a complicated turn of events in his marriage and with his eldest daughter Abby, played in season 1 by Katheryn Newton.

Nordling’s returns as Gordon Klein, the husband to Laura Dern’s Reneta. Klein faces the consequences of a big mistake and risks losing everything along the way.

Armitage returns as Ziggy Chapman, the son of Shailene Woodley’s Jane. At the start of season 2, Ziggy starts second grade and continues to be the light of Jane’s life.

That brings together most of the show’s original cast. One big addition to the season is actress Meryl Streep who will portray Mary Louise Wright, the mother to Alexander Skarsgard’s Perry Wright from the first season, who is searching for answers about what really happened to her son.

The subversive, darkly comedic drama Big Little Lies will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode, and the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.

The second season of Big Little Lies is being written by David E. Kelley from a story by author Liane Moriarty, while Andrea Arnold (American Honey) has signed on to direct all seven episodes. It is expected to air in 2019.
