Billie Piper succeeds Ncuti Gatwa as The Sixteenth Doctor in Doctor Who

May 31, 2025 by Gary Collinson

There’s been speculation over the future of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor for several weeks now, and in a surprise turn of events coming out of the season finale of Doctor Who, the iconic Time Lord has undergone another regeneration – one which may well be the character’s most shocking yet.

As seen in the climax of the episode, Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into a very familiar face – no, not David Tennant again – but rather Tennant’s former co-star Billie Piper, who previously portrayed the Doctor’s companion Rose in the first two seasons of the show’s revival in 2005, with several guest appearances since.

“It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse,” said Piper regarding her return to the show.

Outgoing Doctor Ncuti Gatwa also bid farewell to the role with a statement reading: “I’ve loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.”

“What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti’s great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights,” added showrunner Russell T. Davies.

Gatwa’s role as the Doctor hasn’t been the only subject of speculation regarding the long-running show as of late, with rumours suggesting that Disney could be looking to pull its co-financing deal with the BBC over declining ratings and interest in the series. Will Billie Piper’s return be enough to turn the tide? Only time will tell, but be sure to let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
