Black Widow delay won’t affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline

March 20, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Earlier this week, Disney confirmed that it has pulled the May release of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow due to the coronavirus pandemic, with fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe now having to wait to get their first glimpse of Phase Four.

As yet, there’s no word as to when we can expect the Scarlett Johansson-headlined solo movie to arrive, which has raised some concern among fans as to how this might impact future instalments in the MCU, such as August’s Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

However, it seems that the delay is unlikely to have any impact on the franchise’s overarching narrative, with Variety quoting an insider as stating that “pushing Black Widow affects nothing on the MCU timeline”.

That’s not to say that future instalments of the MCU won’t be impacted by coronavirus though; production on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was shut down in Prague earlier this month (although Disney+ is apparently still confident of an August premiere), and while filming has wrapped on November’s Eternals, the pandemic may will disrupt post-production, as well as any planned reshoots for the film.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
