Bong Joon Ho would love to make a musical, but it “would have to be different”

March 19, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Following on from Parasite’s history-making success at the Academy Awards, director Bong Joon Ho has revealed he “would love to make a musical” in the future but it would have to be “different.”

“I would love to make a musical,” Bong told Empire. “Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, fuck this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ in the Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different.”

Bong Joon Ho has previously stated during the past month that he’s having a hard time overcoming the exhaustion of the Oscar season and getting back to working on new scripts – so it could be a while before we see the director’s next film.

“Now that I finally have time, I’m trying to get back on it, but I’m so exhausted, mentally and physically,” Bong said when asked about his immediate return to filmmaking in an interview that was published on The Atlantic. “I’m just a shell of a human.”

The director is currently developing a television adaptation of Parasite for HBO alongside Adam McKay with Mark Ruffalo in talks to play the father. However, aside from that, Bong hasn’t confirmed any movie projects by name as of yet besides teasing he is in very early stages of development on two films, one that’s in Korean and “has unique elements of horror and action” and another that is English-language that is “based on a true event that happened in 2016.”
