Box Office: Mortal Kombat fights its way towards $11 million overseas as Godzilla vs. Kong tops $358 million

April 12, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Isn’t it nice to be reading about box-office statistics again? And not the depressing kind which have accompanied the decimation of the moviegoing business over the last year or so. We’re getting to report healthy numbers on a Monday morning, and long may it continue as the multiplexes of the world begin to sanitise their auditoriums for the log-jam of movies awaiting release in 2021.

Leading the way has been Godzilla vs. Kong, which has now roared towards a worldwide tally of $358 million, which includes $69.5 million at the U.S. box-office, meaning the Adam Wingard directed creature-feature has overtaken Tenet ($57 million) to become the pandemic-era’s largest grossing movie domestically.

Warner Bros./New Line debuted their latest Mortal Kombat movie in 17 territories this week ahead of its domestic roll-out into theatres and onto HBO Max on April 23rd. It managed to finish the frame with $10.7 million, $6.1 million of which came from Russia, where it became the biggest Hollywood release since the pandemic, even tracking above pre-pandemic performances of films such as Logan and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Elsewhere around the moviegoing world Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway lifted its Australian gross to an impressive $9.2 million after three weeks, a territory which also saw Bob Odenkirk action flick Nobody take its global cume to just under $30 million, with a $2.34 million weekend, and plenty of countries still to come.

“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat is scheduled for a simultaneous release in theatres and on HBO Max this April 23rd and stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; Laura Brent as Allison Young; and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.
