Brendan Fraser will not appear at the Golden Globes even if nominated for The Whale

November 17, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Given their rocky and at-times horrid history, it’s not a shock that Brendan Fraser has hesitations about appearing at the Golden Globes.

The Whale actor goes as far as saying in an interview with GQ that he will likely not show up, even if he’s nominated at the upcoming award show.

Fraser tells GQ that he “will not participate.”

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that,” Fraser said.

For those unaware, in 2018, Fraser claimed Philip Berk, the then-head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had groped his bottom in 2003. After an investigation, the HFPA concluded that Mr. Berk indeed “inappropriately touched” Fraser but that it “was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.” Fraser previously said the incident “feel reclusive,” which led to him feeling blacklisted from the industry.

In his GQ interview, Fraser says, “I knew they would close ranks. I knew they would kick the can down the road. I knew they would get ahead of the story. I knew that I certainly had no future with that system as it was.”

The Golden Globes saw a 2022 boycott as the HFPA faced criticism for the lack of Black representation among its members. The show still has yet to recover from all that drama. The question remains if they’ll acknowledge the work of Fraser this year.

Thankfully, we are in the middle of a Brendan Fraser renaissance. After starring in the HBO Max series Doom Patrol, the actor will appear in The Whale next. The Darren Aronofsky film is already getting massive acclaim, with early predictors saying Fraser will take home the Best Actor trophy at the 2023 Oscars.
