Bruce Campbell updates on planned Ash return in Evil Dead animated movie

March 14, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The Evil Dead movies have stood the test of time as a staple in the horror world. From the originals in the 80s to modern updates, you can always count on a Deadite-filled romp to get you through.

The focus of many Evil Dead projects, Bruce Campbell, is promoting Evil Dead Rise – a new addition to the series that sees Campbell and franchise creator Sam Raimi taking on behind-the-scene roles. That doesn’t stop Campbell from talking bout his iconic part of Ash Williams and any potential chances to see him again.

In a recent sit-down with Bloody Disgusting, the actor discussed his career, the new Evil Dead movie, and even a planned animated spin-off. He notes that the animated Evil Dead project is still very early in development.

Campbell tells Bloody Disgusting, “All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it. Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world.”

He adds, “It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate…I look forward to it because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”

Bringing the Evil Dead to the world of animation could be one of the most creative endeavors. The Deadites could be bigger, the story could go bolder, and there’s always room for bloodier. In a cartoon format, you can get away with much more without being limited by budget.

Bruce Campbell has retired from any live-action version of Ash, but the animated adventure and even the recent video game are helping keep him alive. Campbell notes his love of taking the character down this route by praising the new game. “It’s the same idiot. I try him eight different ways to Sunday, and then the game folks make sure to steer me in the right direction. They sort of guide you through it, but it’s the same process,” says Campbell. “Same dope, lots of ad-libs.”

Evil Dead Rise, the new film from Lee Cronin, opens in April. Watch the trailer here.

In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), with Sam Raimi, Bruce Cambell, and Rob Tapert producing. Featuring in the cast are Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl), Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist), Morgan Davies (The End), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), and Nell Fisher (Northspur).

Evil Dead Rise is set for release on April 21st.
