Bryan Fuller talks Star Trek: Discovery, Nicholas Meyer asks fans to “lower your expectations”

September 5, 2016 by Gary Collinson

During an appearance at the Star Trek: Mission New York convention this past weekend, fans were treated to a special video from Bryan Fuller, mastermind of the franchise’s upcoming return to the small screen with next year’s Star Trek: Discovery.

In the video, Fuller explained why they opted for the name Discovery for the new starship, stating (via io9) that: “This ship is called the Discovery for a few reasons. Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to the Discovery on 2001: A Space Odyssey, NASA’s vessel the Discovery, and also the sense of discovery.”

Fuller also spoke about the decision to shift the focus from the captain in the new series, saying it would allow for “richer, more complicated” stories about life on the Discovery: “There have been six series all from the captains’ perspective, and it felt like for this new iteration of Star Trek, we need to look at life on a Starfleet vessel from a new perspective.”

On hand in person for the Star Trek: Discovery panel was Nicholas Meyer, director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, who is part of the writers’ room on the series. Meyer wasn’t given much away, but he did ask enthusiastic fans to “lower your expectations”.

“It is a symbiotic relationship and all I’m suggesting is that if you go with open minds and open hearts, you may be rewarded,” said Meyer. “Whereas if you go with a set of impossible to realize expectations, which even you cannot specifically define, then we’re bound to fail. And so I’m saying: Get loose.”

Star Trek: Discovery will get underway in January on CBS All Access in the States and Netflix internationally.
