Cardi B to star in comedy Assisted Living for Paramount

January 15, 2021 by EJ Moreno

One of the rising voices in hip-hop, Cardi B, is looking to join the ranks of Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, and Will Smith as rappers making their way to the big screen. In a recent story from Variety, the trade reports that the W.A.P singer is starring in the upcoming comedy, Assisted Living, coming from Paramount Pictures.

In the report, Variety noes that Assisted Living is described as “a raucous comedy with tremendous heart,” and even compared it to classic comedies like Sister Act and Mrs. Doubtfire.

The film will follow Amber, played by Cardi B, a small-time crook that finds herself in over her head when a heist goes wrong. While on the run from the cops and her former crew, she struggles to find a hideout until things calm down. As she’s running out of time and options, Amber disguises herself as an elderly woman (ala Mrs. Doubtfire) and hides out in a place that she thinks no one would ever look – the nursing home of her estranged grandmother.

The Grammy-award winning rapper recently made her film debut in 2019’s crime drama Hustlers, though she only had a smaller supporting role in the film. She also scored a small role in the upcoming Fast & Furious sequel F9.

Paramount reportedly won the rights to Assisted Living in a competitive 2019 bidding war. The film is based on an original spec script by Kay Oyegun, a writer on the NBC drama This Is Us. At the time of reporting, there’s no director attached to the film.
