Christopher Nolan flying to China to support Dunkirk release

August 17, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Christopher Nolan is jetting off to China to the support the release of Dunkirk.

The WWII drama has been performing above expectations during its run so far, having accumulated $366 million worldwide, including $156.3 million in the US, and a mighty $58 million in the UK.

However, Nolan’s latest has yet to be released in China, the second biggest market in the world. The director has a big following in the country and he will be hoping that can translate into big numbers for his critically acclaimed feature.

The director is set to visit Beijing, and rumours of his visit to the city have been met with “considerable fan excitement” on Chinese social media according to Warner Bros. (via THR).

Nolan will be attending a press conference in the Chinese capital city on August 21, which will then be followed by the premiere of Dunkirk on August 22.

This will be Nolan’s first trip to the capital, having visited other parts of the country in the past.

Previous films by Nolan have performed very well in China, even before the market exploded into what it is today. Back in 2014, Interstellar managed to bring in $122 million, The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 captured $53 million, and Inception brought in $68 in 2010.

China and Japan are the only markets Dunkirk has yet to open in. It will officially release in China on September 1. Japan will follow on September 9.

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”

Dunkirk sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and newcomer Fionn Whitehead.
